Inside Aluminum Extrusion: The Complete Manufacturing Process

Understanding the aluminum extrusion process is critical for engineers looking to optimize their designs for manufacturability (DFM). As an industry leader, we’re detailing the exact technical steps—from raw billet to a precision industrial aluminum profile.

The 8-Step Aluminum Extrusion Process

1. Billet Preparation

6xxx series alloys are cut and preheated to 750-900°F. For high-stress applications, choosing the right extrusion alloy at this stage is vital.

2. Die Preparation

H13 tool steel dies are preheated. This ensures smooth flow and prevents cracking in precision extrusions.

3. Extrusion Press

The billet is pushed through the die by a hydraulic ram. This is where direct vs indirect extrusion methods differ in efficiency.

4. Profile Emergence

The shape emerges and is supported by a run-out table. Surface quality is monitored here for anodizing-ready standards.

5. Quenching

Rapid cooling (water or air) locks in mechanical properties. This determines if you achieve a **T5** or **T6** temper.

6. Stretching

Profiles are stretched to straighten them and align the grain structure, essential for post-extrusion machining accuracy.

7. Cutting & Aging

Profiles are cut and aged in ovens. This process significantly improves the 6061 aluminum properties like hardness.

8. Surface Finishing

Final treatments include powder coating or anodizing to protect the profile from corrosion.
